Climbing Licancabur, the towering volcano visible from San Pedro, is one of the most physically challenging activities in the area. The climb to the summit (5916 m) takes two days, starting from the Bolivian side of the border.

To get to the starting point for the climb, take route 27 east and then route B-243 to the border crossing wiht Bolivia at Hito Cajon. The climb begins near Laguna Blanca in the Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina - Eduardo Avora. Due to the remote location and potential challenges of a high-altitude climb, it is recommended to go with an experience mountaineering guide
