This unique landscape features sand dunes, salt flats, and rock formations that resemble the surface of the moon. Visitors can take guided tours or explore on their own and watch the sunset over the valley.

How to get there

To get to Valle de la Luna from San Pedro de Atacama, you can either take the main road out of town, called Caracoles, or the road to Toconao, called Camino a Toconao.

If you take Caracoles:

  1. Head south out of San Pedro de Atacama on Caracoles.
  2. Follow Caracoles for about 10 km until you reach a fork in the road.
  3. At the fork, take the left branch, which is marked with a sign for Valle de la Luna.
  4. Follow this road for about 7 km until you reach the entrance to Valle de la Luna.

If you take Camino a Toconao:

  1. Head east out of San Pedro de Atacama on Camino a Toconao.
  2. Follow Camino a Toconao for about 12 km until you reach a fork in the road.
  3. At the fork, take the right branch, which is marked with a sign for Valle de la Luna.
  4. Follow this road for about 6 km until you reach the entrance to Valle de la Luna.

Regardless of which route you take, you should be able to reach Valle de la Luna in about 20-30 minutes by car. Just be sure to watch for other vehicles and pedestrians on the road, and drive carefully. Enjoy your trip!

Visitors can take a dip in the crystal clear turquoise waters of these hidden lagoons, located in the desert between San Pedro and Calama. The water in the lagoons is high in minerals, especially salt, which means that you float!
