El Tatio Geysers includes over 80 active geysers, making it the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere. Early morning is the best time to visit, when the geysers’ jets can reach up to 15m high.

The geysers are 80 km (1 hour and 40 minutes) from the center of San Pedro. The road, route B-245, is unpaved and passes through two small settlements (Guatin and Machuca) on the way to the geysers.As it is a long drive in the dark (on rugged roads), many visitors opt to take a guided tour.It can be very cold at high altitudes (close to freezing), so make sure to take several layers of clothing, as well as water and sunblock.

Quebrada Guatin offers a trek of about 5.5 km (with a more challenging option of up to 19 km), where hikers can see centuries-old cactus that grow in the gorge.

Visitors can take a dip in the crystal clear turquoise waters of these hidden lagoons, located in the desert between San Pedro and Calama. The water in the lagoons is high in minerals, especially salt, which means that you float!
